THE MATERNAL/NEONATAL TETANUS
The Maternal/Neonatal Tetanus (MNT) was founded by Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate the deadly disease that takes the lives of about 60,000 newborn babies every year. In 34 countries around the world, about every nine minutes MNT takes the life of a newborn. Additionally, everyday MNT takes the lives of 160 newborns. Tetanus not only affects the newborn babies but the mothers as well. Mothers can be infected when tetanus spores (found in soil everywhere) come in contact with their open wounds and cuts during birth. Many innocent lives are taken due to inadequate immunization services, limited or absent clean delivery services and improper postpartum cord care which every human being should have access to. The majority where these mothers and newborns are affected by tetanus live in Africa and Southern and East Asia, generally areas where women are poor, have little access to health care, and have little information about safe delivery practices. It only takes $1.80 to save a mother and her newborns. By participating in the annual Eliminate Project and fundraising events, you can help spread awareness and save lives for mothers and their children.

PEDIATRIC TRAUMA PROGRAM

The Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) was first founded by the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha in 1994 to fund training for pediatric doctors, nurses, first responders, and pediatric equipment. Unintentional injury is the #1 killer of children age of 14 and under in the US. Every year, 234,000 children from the ages from 14 and younger are hospitalized, about 8.4 million visit the ER and about 11.7 million visit the physician's office. Everyday, there are more than 39,000 fatally injured. In total, there are more than 14 million children suffering from inefficient medical care they need. Studies show that 90% of these unintentional injuries can be prevented but only if we work together to help the cause! Clubs and members from the Kiwanis Family, like us can support PTP by participating in events such as Awake-A-Thon, PTP Spirit Week, and attending fundraisers to become more educated from this cause and make a difference in our world.
WHY SHOULD WE FUNDRAISE?
Key Club not only revolves around community service and leadership building, but also fundraising! Fundraising is crucial for Key Club! Whether the fundraiser is for PTP, MNT, or your own club because it is raising money for a cause. It is necessary to raise money for preferred charities, so it is important to regularly hold fundraisers and publicize it. Fundraisers can be anything as long as it is planned out and thought through!
